Glassine vs. Vellum: Creative Ways to Use Them in Your Craft Projects

by Julie Hyde on September 14, 2025

If you’re a crafter, you’ve probably seen glassine and vellum on the store shelves and wondered, “What’s the difference—and how do I actually use them?” Both papers are semi-transparent, light, and versatile, but they each bring a unique texture, feel, and style to your projects. Knowing when to use one over the other can take your crafting to the next level.

Glassine Paper

Glassine is smooth, slightly waxy, and lightweight. It has a subtle sheen and a delicate crinkle when handled, which makes it perfect for adding texture or creating hidden elements in your projects.

Project Ideas for Glassine:

  1. Mini Envelopes & Pockets – Fold glassine into tiny envelopes or pockets to tuck journaling, tags, or small keepsakes into scrapbooks, journals, or planners. The semi-transparent nature keeps things a little hidden, adding a fun “peek-a-boo” effect. I have some cute glassine envelopes in the shop.

  2. Layered Backgrounds – Use glassine sheets as soft layers under photos or patterned papers. It mutes bright colors slightly, creating depth and a soft, vintage look.

Vellum Paper

Vellum is smooth, slightly thicker than glassine, and has a soft, delicate appearance. It’s perfect for overlaying, stamping, or embossing. Vellum gives your projects a polished, dreamy look while maintaining clarity underneath. You can find various sizes of vellum in the shop under specialty papers.

Project Ideas for Vellum:

  1. Overlay Effects – Place vellum over patterned paper or photos to create a subtle, soft focus effect. You can also layer multiple vellum sheets for a more artistic look.

  2. Stamped or Embossed Accents – Vellum takes ink and embossing powders beautifully. Stamp a sentiment or pattern on vellum and layer it over your project for an elegant finish.

Tips for Using Both in Your Projects

  • Both papers are delicate, so avoid using heavy adhesives that can tear or wrinkle them. Consider using small glue dots, washi tape, or double-sided tape along edges.

  • Mix and match! For example, a glassine pocket with a vellum overlay can give your page dimension, texture, and a polished look all at once.

  • Don’t be afraid to experiment. Both glassine and vellum are forgiving, and even a “mistake” can create a beautiful effect.

Want to see how we created those gorgeous little envelope pockets?  I'll walk you through the step-by-step process of transforming simple glassine envelopes into stunning keepsakes.

With just a touch of Distress Oxide inks, some carefully chosen fussy cut flowers and leaves, and a few extra embellishments for sparkle and texture, you can make envelopes that are not only beautiful but also practical for tucking in tags, journaling cards, or tiny treasures. These pocket envelopes are perfect for scrapbooking layouts, junk journals, or even as sweet little gift holders. [Find out how: Glasine Envelope Pockets!

Life gets busy—like really busy. Between family, work, and all the other things we juggle, sometimes it feels like there’s no time to squeeze in a creative moment. That’s exactly why I started Monday Minis—my little way of carving out some “me-time” in the middle of the everyday chaos.

This is definitely one of those gotta capture the photo...moments, taken with a film camera over 30 years ago. Once upon a time, long ago, I worked for a photographer and of course he/we developed all the photos in a real darkroom. I was very luck I guess to get free film and the opportunity to develop my own photographs
