Product Talk: The Patina Effect

Product Talk: The Patina Effect

Product Talk: The Patina Effect

Welcome to Product Talk, our new monthly feature where we take a closer look at a particular product, technique, or crafty trend. We'll explore what it is, how it works, what makes it special, and hopefully inspire you to give it a try yourself.

This month we're diving into the beautiful world of Patina Effects.

So, What Exactly Is Patina?

Over the years, I've often used the term Verdigris when describing those gorgeous aged blue-green finishes we love seeing on vintage-inspired projects. Lately though, I've started using the term Patina instead.

That got me thinking...

What's the difference between Patina and Verdigris?

And while we're at it...

Why don't we just call it rust?

Let's find out!

Patina is a broad term used to describe the natural aging process that occurs on surfaces over time. It can refer to fading, darkening, weathering, tarnishing, or changes in appearance that happen through age, exposure, and use.

When metal ages naturally, a thin layer forms on its surface. This layer not only changes the appearance but can also help protect the metal underneath.

Think of the beautiful green colour on old copper roofs, weathered garden ornaments, vintage metal signs, or aged bronze statues. That's patina in action.

Creating a Patina Look Without Waiting Years

The good news is you don't need to leave your projects outside for decades to achieve this effect!

Many craft companies have developed products specifically designed to recreate the look of aged metal.

Using specialty paints, inks, sprays, waxes, and patina kits, you can achieve stunning weathered finishes in a matter of minutes.

Most patina kits include a metallic base colour, usually bronze or copper, together with an oxidising solution that reacts with the paint to create realistic aged effects.

It's one of those techniques that always feels a little bit magical.

Is Rust the Same Thing?

Not quite.

Rust is actually one type of patina.

Rust forms when iron or steel reacts with oxygen and moisture. The result is that familiar reddish-brown surface we see on old tools, garden furniture, and metal objects exposed to the weather.

So while all rust can be considered a form of patina, not all patina is rust.

Patina can be blue, green, turquoise, brown, black, or even golden depending on the material and environmental conditions.

Patina vs Verdigris

This is where things get interesting.

Patina

Patina is the general term used to describe the aged appearance that develops on a surface over time.

It can refer to:

  • The weathered finish on metal

  • The sheen developed through age and use

  • The character and worn appearance that comes with time

Verdigris

Verdigris is much more specific.

It refers to the distinctive blue-green coating that forms on copper, brass, and bronze as they oxidise.

Those beautiful turquoise tones we often try to recreate on mixed media projects are technically Verdigris.

So in simple terms:

Verdigris is a type of patina, but patina isn't always verdigris.

Craft Products That Create Gorgeous Patina Effects

DecoArt Designer Finishes Kits

If you're looking for a realistic aged metal finish, the DecoArt Designer Finishes range is a fantastic place to start.

These kits make it easy to recreate authentic-looking weathered metal surfaces in just a few simple steps. Whether you're creating rusty textures, aged copper, or antique finishes, the results can be surprisingly realistic.

They're perfect for mixed media projects, home décor, altered art, journals, and more.

Ranger Perfect Pearls

Another favourite is the Ranger Perfect Pearls range.

These beautiful pigment powders can be mixed with water, paints, inks, embossing powders, clay, and other mediums to create luminous metallic finishes.

The soft shimmer works beautifully when combined with patina colours to create aged metallic effects with extra depth and interest.

Tim Holtz Distress – Salvaged Patina

When Tim Holtz released Salvaged Patina, it quickly became a favourite among mixed media artists.

This gorgeous blue-green shade captures the look of aged copper perfectly and works beautifully with stamps, stencils, sprays, inks, and embossing techniques.

Layer it with browns, coppers, and darker tones and you'll create stunning vintage effects that look like they've been aging for years.

Give It a Try

One of the things I love most about patina effects is that no two projects ever turn out exactly the same.

Whether you're creating vintage tags, junk journal embellishments, mixed media canvases, altered books, or scrapbook layouts, patina adds character, depth, and that lovely aged look that so many of us are drawn to.

Have you tried creating a patina effect before?

Do you have a favourite product or technique?

I'd love to hear about it in the comments below. 💕
